As many people are, I'm praying, thinking, reading and all together trying to absorb what is going on with the people in Haiti. I can't imagine the horror and anguish they are going through. 90% of the population was poor prior to the earthquake, which means that they weren't having their needs met before, so what they are going through now is hell. My husband and I were listening to our children complain about not wanting to do their homework, or chores, or anything that we asked of them. We decided to turn the news on and let them see what the people, and especially the children, were going through in Haiti. No food, water, shelter. Not knowing if their friends or relatives were alive. Not knowing if another after shock was going to hit, and if it did, where were they supposed to go? I'm not sure what kind of impact it had on them. I think TV has kind of dulled their senses. I told my husband that I think we should take them to Haiti and work with the people and then they may appreciate what they have.
It's so easy for us to take for granted what we have. Yes the economy stinks, but most of us are able to get by without eating dirt pies. My daughter is having issues with her joints swelling. I am fortunate enough to be able to make and appointment with a dr., have health insurance and get prompt attention from the dr. Granted we have to pay for some of our healthcare benefits, but we still get excellent care. The poor people of Haiti have no were to go, the hospitals have collapsed, the dr's are either overwhelmed or worse, dead. They have run out of medical supplies and aid is slow coming in because of the infrastructure needs.
I made a donation to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). They have been working side by side with the people for years. They just don't go in for their propoganda shots and then leave. They are in it for the long haul trying to improve lives.
If I put it into perspective, I have nothing to bitch about. Love the ones your with, hug them tight and donate money and say your prayers for the people of Haiti.
